Resilience: No one is defeated until they accept defeat.

No one is defeated until they accept defeat.

That's a powerful statement—it speaks to resilience, determination, and the refusal to give up, regardless of the odds. Defeat isn't merely about external circumstances; it's often a mindset. Many great leaders, athletes, and innovators have faced setbacks, but what kept them going was their unwillingness to accept failure as the sole outcome.

My mention of mindset here is not intended to encourage artificial positivity; instead, I mean for you to focus on the reality of the situation, acknowledging that things will sometimes go wrong. Instead of solely concentrating on positive thinking regarding the problem, you should work on building your resilience to confront reality. In essence, accept things as they are, and then determine how to address the reality of your situation most effectively.

Furthermore, we are accountable for how we think about our situations and, consequently, for how we behave, for better or worse. That said, learn to show yourself grace, recognizing that it takes time to break old habits, which means training your mind to think differently.

In rational emotive behavior therapy (REBT), the emphasis is on learning not to think in absolutist terms, such as “I should…, or I must…,” because our emotions stem from our beliefs, evaluations, interpretations, and reactions to challenges. Therefore, allow room for those moments when an adjustment is necessary in the way you think and act.

The way we perceive difficulties can shape our capacity to overcome them. A loss can be temporary. A setback can be a setup for something greater. If someone continues to fight, adapt, and learn, they're still in the game.

Have you had a moment where perseverance made the difference for you?

Empowering Minds. Inspiring Lives.
